Last month was the European Week against Racism. This event was a cooperative effort between the Chief Diversity Officer team (CDO team), the SeSi Community Center of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Pakhuis de Zwijger and Comité 21 maart. Deriving from this powerful collaboration were seven different events which enriched the lives of many in different across various aspects of their lives. This informative, but above all inspiring, week was coordinated by our innovative colleague Raisa Sambo.
There were a variety of programs with music, spoken word, storytelling, lectures and workshops for all students and employees of the UvA, HvA and interested parties. The week kicked off with a successful workshop conducted by the CDO team entitled: Diversity 101. Highlights of the events include the empowering words of the keynote speakers: Mpho Tutu, Francio Gaudeloupe, Kim Dankoor and Aminata Cairo.

We are stronger together
The CDO team is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity within the university. This year’s theme for the European Action Week against Racism was: We are stronger together: We lift each other up when we care for our community. This is because self-care is not enough on its own; a shift towards community care is also indispensable. Community care recognizes that we do not all have equal access to time and money, which impacts our ability to receive and give care. It reminds us that as human beings we are interdependent. It is a good time to remind ourselves to look after those around us. We hope that the events during the European Action Week against Racism were uplifting and inspiring.
