Amsterdam’s LGBTQ+-student association: A.S.V.Gay

As the academic year is in full swing again and the first block has already passed, A.S.V.Gay is also fully up and running again. A.S.V.Gay is Amsterdam’s LGBTQ+-student association, offering a safe place to about 300 members. What do we do? We are a student association like many others in Amsterdam: we focus on having fun, together. We play games, we do crazy88s, we have symposia, we have weekly drinks, we party and drink and occasionally make out, usually in that order. We are regular students. What sets us apart is that almost all of us are LGBTQ. We know what it’s like, we know what we want and need. A.S.V.Gay is a place where you are accepted, no matter what.

We know that our freedoms have come through struggle and fight, efforts and education. There is a lot to be done and a lot of prejudice that still exists. Therefore we are socially involved. We try to normalize making your pronouns explicit, mine are she/her by the way. We also promote gender neutral bathrooms and more open conversations about sex and sexuality. For example, it’s also important to know that bisexuals are not confused, and that pansexuals do not feel attracted to frying pans, thank you very much.

Our connection to the UvA is a special one, since the founders of A.S.V.Gay were students at the UvA. Thankfully, the cooperation has sustained throughout the years. We are excited to see what this year will bring! If you want to experience it with us, or want to ask other questions, don’t hesitate to reach out!
